27 B.C.- Octavian takes the title of Augustus becoming the first Emperor of Rome

Caesar Augustus, formally known as Octavian. Julius Caesars adopted son and grand nephew
Accomplishments:
-One of Augustus's greatest achievement were roads
Roads helped the city travel, trade, communicate, and move goods easily
-Another achievement is that he fed the population grain imported from africa
The Julio-Claudian emperors were Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius, and Nero.
Their total reign was to 14 AD to 68 AD.
The four emperors were Galba, Otho, Vitellius, and Vespasian.
What happened was once Nero died, Galba made himself emperor. The Governor of Upper Germany rebelled and destroyed Galba making Vitellius emperor. Then Vitellius was killed making Otho emperor, one of Galba's friend. Next the western part of Asia felt like they needed a emperor so Vespasian's allies destroyed Otho making him emperor.

The five emperors are Pertinax, Didius Julianus, Pescennius Niger, Clodius Albinus, and Septimius Severus.
Year of the six Emperors
Emperors:
Maximinus Thrax, Gordian I, Gordian II, Pupienus, Balbinus, and Gordian III.
What Happened:
First it started with Maximinus getting assassinated by his guard. Then his co-emperors Gordian I and II came in to take his place. But it only lasted for 20 days when new co-emperors came called Pepienus and Balbinus. Then it turned to Gordian III to be emperor.
Diocletian:
Date: 284-305 AD
1. Diocletian established property and income taxes to pay for roads, bridges, sewers, and defense
2. Diocletian formed a Tetrarchy
- rule by the four, Empire divided in half
- which ended the civil war
- both east and west will have an emperor called Augustus, and an emperor in training, called Caesar
Constantine The Great
Date: 306-337 AD
1. Constantine battled at the Milvian Bridge against Maxentius
2. Constantine won the battle by seeing a vision in his dream
- The vision was him winning the battle and a cross in the sky reading in Hoc Signo Vince meaning "in the sign of victory"
- Then Constantine defeated Maxentius making Rome a Christian empire
3. Edict of Milan was passed making Christianity legal
- Restored christians civil rights and property

Date: 379-395 AD
1. Outlawed gladiator games
2. Declares Christianity the only legal religion
